Serial Killers

 Serial Killers

A serial killer is a person who kills three or more people, usually over a period of more than a month, with a significant period of time between them. Most authorities set a limit of three murders, while others lower it to four or two. There are top five Serial killers lived in the world.

  • Jack the Ripper
  • Jeffrey Dahmer
  • Harold Shipman
  • John Wayne Gacy
  • H.H. Holmes

 Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer who operated in and around the impoverished Whitechapel district of London, England in the fall of 1888. In both criminal case files and contemporary newspaper reports, the killer was referred to as the Whitechapel Killer and the Leather Apron.

Attacks attributed to Jack the Ripper usually involved female prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of London's East End. Their throats were cut before their abdomens were mutilated. The evisceration of at least three victims led to speculation that their killer had some anatomical or surgical knowledge. Rumors of a connection to the murders intensified in September and October 1888, with numerous letters from alleged murderers to the press and to Scotland Yard.

 Jeffrey Dahmer

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer (May 21, 1960 – November 28, 1994), also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or Milwaukee Monster, was an American serial killer and sex offender who killed and dismembered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. Later murders involved the permanent preservation of corpses, murders, and body parts—usually all or part of the skeleton.

Although he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder,[7] schizotypal personality disorder,[8] and psychotic disorder, Dahmer was found to be legally sane at his trial. He was convicted of fifteen of the sixteen murders committed in Wisconsin and sentenced to 15 life terms on February 17, 1992.[9] Dahmer was later sentenced to a sixteenth life sentence for an additional murder in Ohio in 1978. On November 28, 1994, Dahmer was beaten to death by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver at Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin.

 Harold Shipman

Harold Frederick Shipman (14 January 1946 – 13 January 2004), known as Fred Shipman, was an English general practitioner and serial killer. With an estimated 250 victims, he is considered one of the most successful serial killers in modern history. On January 31, 2000, Shipman was found guilty of murdering 15 patients under his care. He was sentenced to life in prison with a life sentence.

The Shipman Inquiry, a two-year long inquiry into all deaths confirmed by Shipman, chaired by Dame Janet Smith, investigated Shipman's crimes. It revealed that Shipman targeted vulnerable older people who trusted him as their doctor. He killed his victims by administering lethal doses or abnormal amounts of drugs.

Nicknamed "Dr. Death" and "The Angel of Death", Shipman is the only British doctor to have been convicted of killing his patients, although other doctors have been convicted of similar crimes or lesser charges. Shipman committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell at HM Prison Wakefield, West Yorkshire, aged 57, on 13 January 2004.

Such memoirs include paintings, writings, and poems of these killers. Recently, marketing has further capitalized on interest in serial killers with the rise of trading cards, action figures, and various merchandise such as The Serial Killer Files: The Who, What, Where, How, and Why of the World's Most. Horrible Killers by Harold Schechter and The A-Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers by Schechter and David Everitt. Some serial killers become famous in such a way that they acquire fans and may even auction off their previously personal possessions on sites such as eBay. Ed Jean's stolen 150-pound tombstone and Bobby Joe Long's sunglasses are just a few examples.
